February Newsletter

Happy "Middle of Winter" from Maple Street! We hope you are all staying warm and dry and keeping your instruments humidified.
This month we are starting a new series that spotlights the outstanding luthiers whose guitars we carry. Our first builder is George Lowden from Downpatrick, Ireland. Our own John Cable, who is currently touring with John McEuen's String Wizards will give you a rundown on his current rig that incorporates several components that are available here at the shop. There is also a video of the Wizards in action. In Electric Avenue, Nick DiSebastian is featuring a comparison between an American Professional Stratocaster and a G&L American Legacy, both great guitars invented and refined by Leo Fender. Our Teacher of the Month is Charles Williams. The Guitar of the Month is from our very own Jeff Henry. It's a beautiful Dreadnaught Sunburst that you must play to appreciate. MSG Guitar Students: Be sure and check out the fantastic offer from Eddie Owens Presents for all of you who take lessons here in the store.
Guitar of the Month - Henry DSB
The Jeff Henry DSB is a beautiful example of the perfect Dreadnaught guitar. The Sunburst Sitka top and African Mahogany back and sides give it a full-bodied, balanced tone. This is a great guitar for flat pickers and rhythm players. It's balance and depth will also make it a great recording tool.
The Justin Sams Band
The Justin Sams Band, featuring our own Lindsay Petsch will be performing several dates in February:
Friday, Feb. 2nd (8:30-11:00 pm) at Ziba's in Grant Park,
Saturday, Feb. 10th (show starts a 8:00 pm) at the Red Light Cafe with Control Burn, featuring former Maple Street employee, Harris Kendrick.
Saturday, Feb. 17th, Bob Dylan Tribute Night at the Red Light Cafe, benefitting the Lake Claire Community Land Trust.
Luthier Spotlight: George Lowden
Lowden Guitars are created in Downpatrick, Ireland by George Lowden and his staff. George began building guitars professionally in 1974. Word quickly spread and soon he was building guitars for some of the world's preeminent guitarists. Pierre Bensusan, Richard Thompson and Alex De Grassi became Lowden players early on and solidified George Lowden as one of the great luthiers in the world. His unique design and wood combinations give his guitars a singular voice that is robust yet delicate with lovely overtones and sustain, making them perfect for fingerstyle players and strummers alike.  Fantastic wood combinations are available as well. For example, the 35 Series guitars can come in a combination of Cedar, Sitka or Adirondack tops with a variety of side and back woods that include: Bastone Walnut, Madagascar Rosewood,  Honduran Rosewood, Honduran Mahogany, Ancient Cuban Mahogany, Figured Koa, Myrtle, Figured Tasmanian Blackwood, African Blackwood and Cocobolo. All of these great woods have their own tonal characteristics that give each Lowden Guitar it's own personality.
