August Newsletter

Welcome to the hottest month of the year! In this, the August issue of our newsletter, we are featuring a beautiful Collings 01. John has a story about his beloved D18 and Lindsay has an instructive video on different types of capos and the best ways to utilize them. Coincidentally, we have a special on capos for the month.  We are pleased to announce the addition of Supro to our line of electric guitars and amplifiers. Retro Cool!  We'll also fill you in on our staff and how their bands and projects are going. It's August! Stay Cool!
In Memoriam
We at Maple Street Guitars were saddened at the passing of one of the great luthiers of our time, Bill Collings. Bill brought quality and soul to every instrument he made. He will be greatly missed by the guitar community. His family at Collings Guitars will continue and build on his amazing legacy. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Thank you, Bill.
We would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Sonny Houston. Sonny has been a fixture on the local bluegrass and singer/songwriter scene for many years. He was one of our recommended teachers of bluegrass instruments and a multi-talented musician. Sonny wrote many great songs and taught many folks how to play mandolin, banjo and guitar. He will certainly be missed.

August Featured Guitar!

Collings 01 Mahagony 14-fret

Our featured guitar this month is a beautiful Collings 01 Mahagony 14-fret. Collings guitars are noted for their rich, modern overtones which give them a unique voice and expression. This guitar has tone and volume that belies its first impression as being less than full-sized. It can double as a travel guitar or a small OM, performing both roles equally well. The same neck and woods options offered with larger Collings models are available on the 0 as well, giving players an almost infinite range of tonal possibilities

John Cable's D-18
This old warhorse has been all over the world and has seen some things. I purchased this guitar in 1970 in Lubbock, Texas. It traveled to Colorado that year and, because of it's volume, clarity and responsiveness, became my main guitar as I began my career playing all over the mountains.  Little did I know that this guitar would be my companion as I traveled all over the world, from the Tonight Show to the Grand Ole Opry and even the Soviet Union.
A few years ago, I decided it needed some special attention so I brought it to Maple Street. They reset the neck, did a fret job and took care of some cosmetic issues that happen to guitars that have been played to death. It still sounds and plays great! I have retired it as a touring instrument, but I still use it in the studio quite a bit. It's got that great Martin D-18 punch and is a great recording rhythm guitar. It's not for sale, but we have three great examples from 1949, 1965 and 2017 in the store that are. Come check them out!
There is nothing better than a smokin' D18.
Here are three D18s from very different eras. All of these guitars are spectacular examples of the best Martin has to offer. The 2017 model (upper left) has the classic punch and articulation found in the best Martin Dreadnaughts. The 1965 model (upper right) has brightness and volume to spare. The 1949 model (lower left) has a rich growl that the bluegrass crowd will love!
All of these fantastic guitars are real players. As with all Maple Street guitars, they are vetted for structural anomalies and set up with proper action
and intonation.
