John - Our good friend and native Georgian, Mark Miller has been on the Atlanta music scene for what seems like his whole life. In the past couple of years he has released two of his strongest records; 2023 Standing on Shoulders and 2025 This Bridge. They were both recorded with the great Robin Salmon at Blue Betty Studios in Ellijay. Strong songwriting, production and Mark's fabulous tenor voice make both of these collections well worth your time.
Chris - Julian Lage - Scenes from Above - I’m a simple man. When there’s a new Julian Lage record, I’m gonna recommend it. This latest evolution from one of the great jazz players of today is a refreshing collection of music that feels particularly “organic” in a period where music seems to be straying further and further from that word. John Medeski’s piano and organ work is a stunning addition to the group’s sound, providing a textural layer for Julian to play against that stands out considerably amidst his already impressive catalog.
Mike - James Hunter - Off the Fence - The latest offering by soul singer and guitarist James Hunter is a yet another example of his prowess as not just a player and singer, but a writer and arranger. From the Van Morrison feature on “Aint That a Trip”, to uptempo bop of “Gun Shy” all the way to the Ray Charles inspired closed “Particular”, there’s not a wasted second on this album. In a cold and often dour time, a record like this is a welcomed ray of sunshine, in which I would encourage one to warm themselves.
Lindsay - Roland Dyens - "Hommage a Brassens," "Nuages," "Night and Day" - A student here recently asked me about the piece Tango en Skai (by Roland Dyens), after seeing the piece performed by a player online. For those close to the classical guitar world, Roland Dyens needs no introduction, as he is considered one of the great talents to emerge over the last generation. Yet, Roland's inventive and playful approach to both composition and performance was truly inspirational, and his music never fails to impress any guitar enthusiast I've ever come across! This October will mark the 10-year anniversary of Roland's passing at the age of 61. So, with our customer's enthusiasm for his discovery of Roland's music fresh on my mind, I have been revisiting the mastery that was readily on display on these recordings (incidentally, "Tango en Skai," is on Hommage a Brassens). Night and Day, may be my favorite of these albums, and a definite must-listen for a jazz lover. However, be forewarned: Night and Day and some other Dyens albums can be difficult to locate, as some are no longer in print. Even so, I urge you to be diligent and track these recordings down--I promise it will be worth it!!!
