C. 1980S Freistadt-Made Dreadnought Case
Hailing from a bygone era, the Martin thermoplastic cases that were common from the mid 60s through the 80s are instantly recognizable amongst Martin collectors. Though perhaps a little bit clunky, these injection-molded cases are known for their very effective insulation properties, particularly with respect to shock from impact. In addition to their rugged thermoplastic exterior, their core is effectively equivalent to high-impact Styrofoam. This particular example was made by Freistadt; and, judging by its features—a black exterior (rather than the pale blue of earlier decades) and a plush blue interior—it likely dates to the early – mid 1980s.
Condition:
This case was part of a fair-sized estate of approximately forty dusty, musty, moldy guitars that we purchased in the fall of 2025. Like most of the guitars and cases in the lot, this case was subjected to a less-than-ideal moist storage environment for an unknown amount of time. While most everything was salvageable, a great deal of cleaning and de-odorizing was necessary before we were comfortable offering items for sale. Due to the impermeable thermoplastic exterior, the metal banded seal/rim, and the impermeable Styrofoam core, this case was in better shape than many and certainly easier to clean! Even so, the exterior was thoroughly scrubbed, and the interior was cleaned with diluted borax solution and baking soda. The case was then left open for many hours outside to air out, and was otherwise stored with baking soda filled packets enclosed. Subsequently, its initial musty odor has been improved to the extent that little evidence, if any, remains. We do note some oxidation on the metal bumpers and some hardware components (e.g., areas of the hinges), but this is fairly minimal. The cloth lid hinge that holds the top lid when the case is opened is missing. Apart from all this, the case is in very good structural condition, with no cracks or separated lining (a common issue with older injection-molded cases) to report. GOOD+ condition.
