2022 O-22C
One might best characterize the amazing sound of a Lowden guitar as spacious and 3-dimenional. Indeed, Lowden guitars posses a unique ability to produce and sustain notes with delicate openness and brilliance against a surprisingly strong foundation. Moreover, one detects a distinctive bloom to the response of a Lowden guitar that is quite unusual—the projection seems to subtly swell after the initial attack. This unique approach to voicing and George Lowden's pairing of tonewoods have created very pliable, responsive and exciting instruments which make fingerstyle playing seem effortless and pickstyle strumming crisp, open, and full. Meanwhile, the Lowden aesthetic epitomizes the naturalist’s interpretation of guitar construction. A strict use of wooden appointments wherever possible and a signature satin finish imparts an understated elegance to the look of these guitars. As a result of this humble cosmetic treatment, the unique natural beauty of the materials is the focal point, until, of course, the guitar starts to speak!
The O body size is arguably the signature Lowden design, and it exemplifies the clarity, depth, and dimension that is associated with Lowden guitars. In the case of the O-22 (formerly the O-10), the thin, responsive cedar top produces a warmth and complexity that is well-mated with the more quick, lively, and reflective qualities of the mahogany back and sides. This somewhat unusual pairing of tonewoods yields a powerful instrument where notes seem to deftly leap out with life and sophistication rather than just explode from the guitar. For these reasons, and with the benefit of the access afforded by its optional cutaway, the O-22C is an absolutely inspiring guitar to play, and thus remains one of our favorite and most popular Lowden models.
