c. 1952 Wide Panel Deluxe (5B3 Circuit) Rebuild
Condition
This early Fender Deluxe was evidently in a sad state when its last owner came across it. Even so, its potential was clear, and the new owner embarked on an ambitious labor of love to honor and rebuild this fantastic classic amp. With the assistance of noted amp restorer, Bruce Bennett (who is based in Chattanooga, TN), this amp now has a new lease on life. That said, it has been significantly modified (and, to some extent, arguably improved) in the process: the cabinet has been re-covered with a tasteful non-lacquered tweed; the back plate was missing and has been replaced with a replica; the grill cloth has been replaced with a period appropriate oxblood cloth; the handle and brackets have been replaced with period appropriate replicas; the speaker has been replaced with an AlNiCo Weber (12F125-A); all capacitors have been replaced; the output transformer and choke have been replaced with vintage Schumachers from the early-mid ‘60s. In effect, little of the original remains, apart from the cabinet (with its original label and illegible serial number), the chassis, the knobs, pots, and inputs. Upon arrival at our store, we noticed some scratchiness on the tone/power knob, so the amp went to our local trusted source, Jeff Bakos, for general service. Jeff replaced one of the octal preamp tubes with an appropriate Sovtek 6SC7 tube, cleaned all the pots and sockets, checked for microphonics, adjusted the power levels, and did a burn-in. All modifications and repairs aside, this Deluxe is a fantastic lower wattage amp with plenty of quick-break-up vintage mojo lurking in its bones; and, being a rebuilt amp, it is a great opportunity to get some of that early Fender Deluxe flavor at a fraction of the price of an all-original example. - GOOD+ CONDITION
