With the unveiling of the El Rey ER-M electric mandolin, it is clear that the design is both leading the charge in a musical evolution and honoring its own roots.

In true signature style, this new model gazes back while pushing ahead. The ER-M is an adaptation of the classic archtop guitar designed by master luthier Otto D’Ambrosio roughly 15 years ago. D’Ambrosio, who named the model after his old band, has found the development of this series the beginning of a new era. The instrument that emerged from the workshop is very pulled-in. Between the tension on the strings and the short scale, this instrument is ready to react. The build includes a solid block chambered mahogany back, a maple top with the f-holes, and the signature El Rey contoured cutaway; while electric features include a Lollar humbucker pickup custom designed for the El Rey.

The finished product, players of any skill-level would agree, honors both the mandolins past and the forward-thinking approach of the El Rey series. The shape, string length and tuning are very much what you’d expect from a traditional mandolin. But the sound offers a whole new electric edge. Charged by a custom wound Lollar humbucker pickup, the typical unison vibrations of the short strings take on a big, resonant overtone that becomes a form of harmony unto itself. The clarity and signal strength of the original Lollar designed pickup opens a world of possibilities when introduced to the nearly endless offering of FX pedals available in today’s marketplace. The effect can be so distinct that the instrument may attract musicians who have never even picked up a mandolin.
