In 2007, Gibson launched a particularly unique endeavor that would last for the better part of the year. For 48 weeks, they would release a “guitar of the week” that had not previously been in production. Many of these models were obscure and eccentric nature. Never before seen finishes, appointments and over aesthetics all found their way onto many of these guitars. On the 21^st week, Gibson released the second iteration of the SG-3. This guitar featured a sunburst finish, chicken head pickup selector and master volume and tone controls. However, the most notable feature of this guitar is the 3 single coil pickups that reside in its pickguard. Although the original blade-style pickups were replaced with Stratocaster single coils, the guitar still maintains its original essence. The combination of a Gibson body and Fender electronics makes for a truly unique guitar.

Needless to say, this is a fairly controversial guitar. It is certainly daring to combine the aforementioned appointments from two very different manufacturers. However, I am of the opinion that this guitar occupies a sonic territory that no other instrument does. It’s incredibly easy to get your tone in the world of the “quack” sound of the 2^nd and 4^th position on a Stratocaster, however, with a twist of the switch you’re right back into the territory of a humbucker. It truly is a sonically versatile instrument.

As an added factor of familiarity, this guitar feels just like how an SG should. It has a notably large neck that makes up for the thin nature of the body, and just like many other SGs exhibits a fair deal of neck dive. A swamp ash body compliments the more significant neck nicely, making the guitar a manageable weight. Everything about this instrument is fairly stripped down aside from the unique pickup configuration. All these factors considered make this a very cool addition to any collection.

This guitar was kept in absolutely pristine condition by its previous owner. Aside from a small amount of normal finish wear on the back, this instrument shows no notable signs of wear. As such we would rate it in EXCELLENT condition.
