Epiphone: USEDFT79TEXAN
(Item ID: USEDFT79TEXAN)
Here we have a classic. In June of 1965, a young Paul McCartney used a 1964 Epiphone Texan (made in USA) to record what would became his most successful song, "Yesterday". Curiously, the original title was "Scrambled Eggs" which, as legend has it, came to him in a dream. Having been subsequently recorded by over 2500 artists, "Yesterday" represents a pop music cornerstone all on its own.
When playing this guitar one experiences a sort of retrospective. Not only does the guitar's voice have the qualities that echo the soft strumming of McCartney, but the instrument itself exudes the vibe of the '60s. In short, this Texan is history alive in your hands, and its example lends perspective to the interest and excitement vintage instruments engender.
For a 46 year-old guitar, this example is in outstanding condition, having no cracks or major wear and all original parts. However, the finish of the guitar has crazed over the years (increasing its vintage appeal in the eyes of many), and it has a few isolated dings. Also, like many Texans of this era, this guitar has a plastic bridge with an adjustable saddle. The bridge was cracked at some point, and it has since been repaired here in our store.
Of course we all know that looks aren't everything, and this Epiphone's feel and tone are a quick reminder. The Texan's neck profile is slender and very comfortable, particularly given the era of its production, when many American guitars tended to have thicker necks. The nut width is fairly narrow at 1 5/8", making this guitar well suited for anyone with smaller hands. But, even those of us accustomed to guitars with wider nuts and more generous string spacings will still find it comfortable and enjoyable to play.
What is most enjoyable about this guitar, though, is its sound. This instrument has a very clear, simple and mature voice with a broad, open, earthy foundation. It is especially even and well blended when strummed, and yields a striking clarity when played fingerstyle making it well suited to accommodate many types of music.
Often, in the case of vintage instruments, attention is focused more on what they are than on what they do - an instruments functionality is sometimes of a lower ranking concern. With this guitar, however, priorities may have to be re-ordered. It is an instrument first, and as such, it is not one to have and enjoy simply for its interesting features and story. With its good sound, easy playability, and history, this Texan well represents what is desired most in an instrument whether old or new - a total package of attractive qualities which scores high in every metric of importance.
This guitar includes the original chipboard case, but purchasing an additional hard case for general use and shipping is recommended. (used)
