Barnett, Kris: PHI BRAZ/CEDAR(Item ID: PHI BRAZ/CEDAR Serial#: 56)
Classical with Latticed Braced Cedar Top and Laminated Brazilian Rosewood Back and Sides, Sound Port, and Raised Fingerboard
The following remarks were written in 2012 when we took delivery of one of Kris's guitars just before he moved to Germany to continue his craft:
"It is always exciting to see an artisan's work develop and mature, to be a witness to its beginnings and to observe its progress powered by the passion and commitment of a talented individual. We have been privileged to have had such an opportunity with the guitars made by Kris Barnett who's desire, dedication, and determination have enabled him to covert his dream of building fine instruments into a reality. The superb quality of his recent instruments speaks to the invaluable knowledge he has gained from several years of experience and how it has been deepened by purposeful persistence. It is fair to say that his skills now are honed to a level that are a match for those of other fine and accomplished luthiers. Like a seasoned performer, Kris has developed his voice, knows how to use it, and can deliver. We are delighted by his achievement."
This guitar, like a fine chef's signature entree, appeals first to one's visual sense - it is mouthwateringly delicious to the eyes. Its sleek top finish enhances the natural beauty of the select woods all of which blend together seamlessly, and the simple unique metallic inlays that garnish the head plate, rosette and bridge are in tasteful harmony with the whole.
The sound of this guitar, like its sumptuous appearance, is burnished with a warm, smooth, balanced foundation. The instrument produces a surprisingly wide dynamic range (perhaps enhanced by the sound port), and it easily supports efforts to create tones with many contrasting timbres. The feel and playability are both firm and fast, and the raised fingerboard makes access to the upper registers remarkably easy."
This 2011 Phi model does have some finish wear to report, and it has a small top crack that has been repaired so well that it is barely noticeable. In consideration of these blemishes, we would rank the overall cosmetic condition of this guitar as very good, and with respect to such we would price it conservatively. Of course, a performer will value most the sound of an instrument, and, in this regard, one will not be disappointed upon hearing this guitar's voice, as its many fine qualities will only serve to enrich one's performance.
This guitar includes a TKL double-arched hardshell case. (used)
