Kohno, Masaru: KOHNO 30

(Item ID: KOHNO 30    Serial#: 810637)

Masaru Kohno Guitars KOHNO 30 1981 Model 30 Classical with Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce Top

The Model 30 was debuted in 1975. It was the new top model Kohno guitar (he generally offered three), and it featured a number of significant cosmetic enhancements over his models 10, 15 and 20. Otherwise, all the models shared the same structural design, and thus, shared the superb performance characteristics that distinguished Kohno guitars generally.

The new look of the 1975 Model 30 included a much more ornate headstock design, and a mosaic strip matching the rosette's binding was incorporated into the top's purfling. The guitar also featured more highly figured Brazilian rosewood, and the European spruce commonly used on the top was not stained as was the practice with the former models. Finally, the instrument was fitted with premium quality Landstorfer tuning machines with real Mother of Pearl buttons.

The Model 30 remained the top model Kohno until c.1978 when the Model 50 was introduced. It featured further design changes to the headstock as well as to the bridge, and even more elaborate enhancements were made to the trim. Subsequently, the Model 30 became the number two guitar Kohno offered, and it saw two minor changes: the headstock shape was simplified, and it was now fitted with deluxe Gotoh tuning machines instead of the premium Landstorfers which, henceforth, became exclusive to the Model 50. In the early '80s, a model 80 was introduced, and, later, in the middle '80s the numbering system used to distinguish the models - and their prices - was replaced with a naming system.

This 1981 Model 30 with its spruce top now aged to a warm brown hue is in excellent condition with only a trace of playing and some minor handling wear. Its playability is superb, and the beautifully alluring balance of power, color, and clarity that players acknowledge make a Kohno especially desirable and distinguishes them as top quality instruments is evident from the first chord sounded.

This guitar includes its original hardshell case. (used)
