1990 PRS Bass IV “As Is”
This PRS Bass IV is a rare bird. Hailing from the early days of Paul Reed Smith, this bass most certainly bears the hallmarks of the company’s contemporary design—elegant, streamlined, and comfortable body design that is complemented by re-imagined circuitry. For example, the Bass IV features a switchable active preamp, a five way rotary switch, dual tone knobs (“deep” & “clear”), and three PRS-designed pickups with a hum-canceling dummy pickup mounted to the back of the bass.
This particular Bass IV has its fair share of dings, scuffs, and dents, and finish chips, all of which are signs of an instrument that has been well played but not abused. Apart from this normal wear and tear, the bass has a few alterations of note: a sequence of digits has been carved in the back of the headstock, and a Hipshot M4 Schaller Drop tuner has been added on the low E string. Of most concern, however, is the fact that during our initial inspection of this Bass IV we discovered that its active circuit was powerfully microphonic, and could create a good bit of noise in the right conditions. We contacted PRS regarding this issue and were told that the problem probably stems from the preamp and that unfortunately no parts were available - their recommendation was to retrofit the bass with new pickups and a new active preamp. For this reason, we are selling this bass guitar "as-is".
That said, this Bass IV is quite useable in passive mode and boasts impressive overall tone. Weighing in at 8.7lbs, it is also a very manageable bass for even a long gig. Like all guitars we sell, this Bass IV has been thoroughly evaluated in our repair shop and has been professionally setup to play its best. All in all, this Bass IV would make for a great mod project, and it would still be a good option for anyone seeking a solid workin’ man’s, American-made bass.
