Martin D-28 Clarence WhiteThis is a copy of the iconic mid 1930's D-28 used by Clarence White, the legendary bluegrass player, which is now owned and played by Tony Rice, the contemporary legend of that genre. The original D-28 has Brazilian rosewood back and sides with an Adirondack spruce top, and it has had a number of well known structural modifications the most familiar of which is the oversized soundhole. This guitar does not have the Brazilian rosewood back and sides, but is does have the Adirondack top, large soundhole and some other features in common with the original. Superior copies of the original all seem to share one important tonal characteristic the original is rumored to possess - a big, deep, full, clear foundation to each note. Some attribute this to the larger soundhole. The chamber resonant frequency is altered by a number of things, including the size of the soundhole. So, maybe that is the secret. Whatever the case, this D-28CW is another wonderful example which definitely has a unique, exceptional, and compelling voice.
